Nassau, Bahamas (July 4th, 2017) – The Baha Mar Resort Foundation was proud to invite one of its partners, The Bahamas National Trust to visit the Baha Mar Sanctuary as part of their ‘Summer Safari’ Camp. During this week the Bahamas National Trust’s summer program placed emphasis on endangered species in The Bahamas such as the Rock Iguana, the Bahama Parrot and the Nassau Grouper. On this day, the focus was on Sea Turtles, therefore Baha Mar’s Sanctuary with its 7 Green and one Hawksbill Sea Turtles served as the perfect outdoor classroom for the 46 children participating in the camp, which takes place on New Providence, but also Abaco, Andros, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera. For this special excursion the BNT joined forces with the Cape Eleuthera Institute who brought on Meagan Gary, Senior Research Assistant to share her knowledge with the children. She spoke about the drastic decline of sea turtle populations in The Bahamas and dangers they face from pollution, harvesting, entanglement from fishing nets and last but not least climate change. In addition, she encouraged the children to recycle, and save water and electricity with every day measures.
“It is important for us to bring attention to endangered species in The Bahamas and educate our resort’s visitors on the issues of conservation and preservation of the natural resources and animals in The Bahamas”, says Baha Mar’s Chief Scientist Vanessa Benjamin.
Baha Mar will collaborate with BNT to execute various on-property conservation initiatives, including eco-tourism projects benefiting the guest experience, Bahamas parrot repopulation efforts, support for the Baha Mar flamingos in residence program, coral reef restoration programs, Hobby Horse nature tours, fundraising events to support BNT and numerous other initiatives.
